January 2011

Median: 115.77

The Case Shiller Home Price Index is an indicator of U.S. housing prices nationally.

The data presented is inflation adjusted and presented in July 2011 dollars.

We can see that the housing bubble of the early 21st century pushed US house prices to their highest level on record in real dollars, nearly twice the mean or median house price from the previous century.

For the Case Shiller index in nominal (non-inflation-adjusted) dollars, see the Case Shiller Home Price Index.

Data is courtesy Robert Shiller, from his book, Irrational Exuberance, and Standard and Poor's, which provides more information on the methodology for calculating the Case Shiller Home Price Idices.
